Dinosaur Grenade… what a curious name for a fruit. The Dinosaur Grenade is actually a pluot, a delicious cross between a plum and apricot created via a cross-breeding programme by farmers in California. The fruit was given the nickname ‘Dinosaur’ due to its dappled skin texture and colouring.
The Dinosaur Grenade is intensely sweet when ripe, and tastes similar in texture and flavour to a plum. It’s perfect for a sweet treat on its own or even as an ingredient in desserts like tarts, topped on ice cream or yogurt, made into a sauce for pancakes or added to a fresh summer salad!
Pluots are an extremely healthy fruit, high in vitamins A and C, have a low fat content, and are sodium and cholesterol free. Although they contain higher levels of sugar, each fruit contains just 40 – 80 calories, depending on it’s size. It’s a healthy sweet snack to jazz up your afternoon!
How to know when the fruit is ripe
Similar to a plum, you can tell when the pluot is ripe if it yields to pressure and becomes very fragrant.
